These species are\nclassified as critically endangered species, according to the International\nUnion for Conservation of Nature (IUCN); furthermore, they are considered \"Threatened\nSpecies\" by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species\nof Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on the Conservation of\nMigratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).\n\nIX.-That\nINCOPESCA is the Scientific Authority for those species of fisheries and\naquaculture interest, and it is in its interest to ensure the conservation and management of these\nspecies.\n\nX.-That it is of\nspecial importance that Costa Rica adopt conservation measures that allow\nthe sustainability of sawfish in Costa Rica.\n\nXI.-That it is in\nthe national interest to know and update the population status of\nsawfish in Costa Rica, to promote measures for their protection and conservation.\n\nXII.-The Objective\nof this agreement is to protect the populations of the two sawfish species\npresent in our country and at the same time to have better technical-scientific\ninformation in order to strengthen the sustainability of these species\nthrough the adoption of conservation and management measures in Costa Rica.\n\nXIII.-That it is\nthe duty of INCOPESCA to strengthen the population sustainability of\nsawfish (Pristis pristis and P. pectinata) in Costa Rica, through this agreement;\nthe Board of Directors,\n\nTherefore;\n\nAGREES:\n\n1º-A permanent closed season (veda) is established for the capture of sawfish with any type of\nfishing gear throughout the country.\n\n2º-During the\nclosed season mentioned in the preceding article, fishing for sawfish\n(Pristis pristis and P. pectinata) conducted for\nscientific research purposes may be permitted.\n\n3º-Whoever incidentally captures\na sawfish must release it if it is found alive. All\ncaptures must be reported to INCOPESCA for the respective collection of\nscientific information.\n\nFor these purposes, a\nbiological-fishery data table with the required scientific\ninformation is attached below.
